Hello All! My name is Melissa, and I'm a para-educator for a special ed department in a public high school. I'm part way through my master's degree and teaching certificate, and for one of my classes I'm doing some research on what people think about including multimedia and technology in instruction for students with IEPs, FSPs, and 504 plans. I'd really appreciate any and all participation in my project.

If you are the PARENT or GUARDIAN of a child with an IEP, FSP, or 504 plan, please fill out my short, anonymous survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9GMNBFP

If you are a STUDENT or a FORMER STUDENT with an IEP, FSP, or 504 plan, please fill out my short, anonymous survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9BTKGJF

If you are a certificated TEACHER, please fill out my short, anonymous survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/93NBY3D

Thank you so much for all your help!

Classroom library [Aug. 14th, 2011|08:23 am]

What would you experienced teachers consider the must-have books for a 9th grade English classroom library? I'm starting from scratch AND a new teacher, in an inner city DC, 100% African American, low achieving school. I need a wide range of reading levels with a range of authors and topics beyond "written by a dead white guy" (as my summer school students liked to say). Suggestions for fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and poetry are all welcome!

Our required reading for the year: Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Things Fall Apart.

grant [Jun. 12th, 2011|07:34 pm]

I wrote a grant proposal for the Pepsi Refresh Project to get classroom libraries all over my school. I could really use some support and votes. I work in a poor area, and my students don't have access to books at home. Here's the link: www.refresheverything.com/booksforelston

Please take a minute to vote. It would mean a lot to me and my students. You can vote once a day until June 30 at midnight.

If your school needs money for a project, I also recommend trying out your own proposal.

Praxis II [Feb. 21st, 2011|12:39 am]

Any educators or future educators here who have recently taken the Praxis II in English Content Knowledge? Did you use a study guide? Which one, and do you feel it prepared you for what was on the exam?

I've been out of college for almost four years now, and am taking the exam next month. The study guides are overwhelming me, and I'm not sure how difficult this is going to be. I did well in college but didn't take any real "grammar" classes (besides History of the English Language and Latin, which count in my mind!) and I'm not sure how much of a negative impact that's going to have on me.

Creative Writing Study [Jan. 5th, 2011|07:33 pm]
alecto42

Hi, my name is Wayne, and I’m studying the ways in which creative writing is taught in primary and secondary schools and college. Creative Writing is very different from English studies, in that it encourages creative thinking and putting in to practice the English skills one has learned in an imaginative way, whether by writing poetry and stories, updating a CV or advertising a product to sell. We all use creative writing in our lives.

It is my ambition to study more the ways in which Creative Writing is taught in schools and colleges. What are we doing to ensure the next generation of writers – our children – are being taught the necessary skills to create the novels and critical essays of the future?

Obviously the complexities of teaching English cannot be reduced to a few simple questions and answers, but I’m hoping this little study will be a starting point for a bigger examination of the subject. I feel it is important to examine how Creative Writing is taught and regarded as a subject in order to make it more viable and accessible.

If you can go to my journal and answer the questions in my most recent post, I would be very grateful. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Wayne

Literacy Centers, Bulletin Boards, and Small Group Instruction [Dec. 25th, 2010|12:26 pm]

I was trying to go through the archives to see if this question had been asked, but my search didn't reveal any post.

I am a ninth grade English teacher so this question is for upper middle school and high school teachers (7-12). Do you work with small groups (small group instruction) within your class? If so, how do you set it up? Any links to resources you have used? Do you have you students work at literacy workstations/ literacy centers or file folder centers? How do you have those centers setup? What do the other students do while some of the students are at centers? Lastly, I need bulletin board ideas for literary terms, grammar, and William Shakespeare.

Mythology suggestions [Dec. 7th, 2010|12:03 am]

And another, unrelated, question: have any of you taught mythology, fairy-tale of folklore units? To 7th graders? What stories, texts, films, etc. did you use, or would you want to use if you were to do this? Any recommendations?

Questions about teaching grammar [Dec. 6th, 2010|11:43 pm]

stephantom
Please help! I'm a student teacher this year and I'm doing a research paper on grammar instruction in middle school (and to a lesser extent, high school). I'd really appreciate it if any teachers out there could share their thoughts and experiences regarding teaching grammar.

Really, any thoughts you have on this topic would be helpful. I have some specific questions; answer whichever and as many as you feel like or have something to say about.

some questions )

Thanks!

October 20th is the National Day on Writing. Does anyone have plans for participate? Any teachers plan to have their students participate? Any college students know of events taking place on campus for it? I encourage everyone to WRITE, whether you participatie with a group or alone. Writers come in all shapes forms and the results vary in format. Make your contribution.

Student Blogs. Any ideas? [Sep. 12th, 2010|06:05 am]

A while ago, perhaps about a year, I was wondering if anyone had taken up blogging with their students - or, rather, getting their students their own blogs.  I was frustrated with the fact that blogger, wordpress, livejournal, and tumblr had all been blocked by the school's firewall.  (Fahrenheit 451 Wall, is more like it.  The other day, I was blocked from opening a student's essay on irony because she had talked about "The Cask of Amontillado" and used to word "kill" in the summary.  But that rant is not what this post is about...)  Since then, I've found Edublogs, which is allowed past the school's firewall.  It's basically WordPress and, for the most part, was rather difficult for them to figure out.  I think we've got the hang of it now...

However, after they created their blogs and set up their URLs and got everything together, they looked at me and said "Now what?"
"Um...the air conditioning is broken.  Write about how hot it is." I responded.

Because i hadn't thought that far ahead.  And apparently, neither has the internets, because I've found many and mucho information about incorporating student blogging into the classroom experience.  I already had discussion boards, which the students did regularly, I wanted something that was their own.  And, the blogging that I've witnessed from other classes looks more like someone took journal assignments and posted them online - but hasn't had their kids do much more with it.  There's also a student blogging challenge, which appears to be more related to fixin' up a blog than using blogs in lessons.

So far, I've done a few things. I'd decided that, since they're seniors, on Wednesdays, they will use blogs to explore college essay writing - but then I became afraid that someone might steal their precious work off the 'nets.  (So far, the work hasn't been precious enough to steal, but, yeah..)  I also decided that on Fridays they would link to and talk about a current events issue - however, so far, embedding video on the edublog doesn't seem to be much of an option.

So.
I have a teacher blog.
My students have student blogs.
Now what?

Oh, and PS - it'd be great if this community had a layout that supported tags...and maybe a few memories to go back and check through.  I'm sure that someone else has asked this question before, or will ask this question again, and this resource would be awesome if questions like these were easily categorized.

Just sayin'.
